Electrodiagnostic studies can help discover the cause of muscle weakness, spasms,
pain, numbness, and other abnormal sensations. The two procedures usually used in this testing are needle electromyographic (EMG) examination and nerve conduction studies (NCS).
Prior to testing, our physiatrist will interview you to find out your medical history. This will be followed by a physical examination focused on your symptoms and signs. The testing plan of specific muscles and nerves will be determined and explained to you by the physician.
The time required to complete electrodiagnostic studies may vary but usually is about 40 to 60 minutes. There is no advance preparation for the testing and no permanent after-effects.
